Quitman girls off to quick start
It took less than 15 seconds for the Quitman Lady Bulldogs to start new Head Coach Blake Hamrick on a positive note in their 36-22 season opening win over Campbell.
Ava Burroughs got the opening tip to Maddy Whitehurst who promptly buried a three-point bomb to start Quitman on an 11-0 run in the first quarter. Whitehurst hit another bucket while scoring from Burroughs, Reiny Luman and Julia Simpkins powered Quitman to the lead. The Lady Bulldogs used a smothering defense to keep Campbell scoreless until the Lady Indians shot a free throw with two seconds left in the first quarter making it 11-1 after one quarter.
In the second quarter Burroughs hit a bucket and a pair of free throws leading Quitman to a 17-3 lead. Campbell finally hit their first field goal with just eight seconds left in the half as Quitman went to intermission with a 17-5 lead. All ten Lady Bulldogs saw action as Hamrick kept his team fresh with frequent substitutions.
Burroughs added six more points in the third period while Whitehurst hit for four and Kynlee Love hit a free throw to put Quitman ahead 30-10 going into the final eight minutes. Burroughs put in six more points in the fourth quarter to go with her dominating rebounding skills.
Burroughs led the way with 16 points while senior Whitehurst also hit in double figures with 11 points. Simpkins and Luman each had four points and Kynlee Love added a free throw.
After a game Monday at Spring Hill, the Lady Bulldogs will be in the Union Grove Tournament this weekend.
