Quitman girls go 1-2 in Spring Hill tournament
The Quitman Lady Bulldogs defeated Carlisle in the opening round of the Spring Hill Tournament before falling in a close game against the hosts in the second round.
They Lady Bulldogs easily defeated Carlisle 43-25 behind Maddy Whitehurst’s 20 points. Quitman led 27-7 at the half and coasted in the second half for the victory. Other scoring for Quitman came from Lindsay Hornaday with six, Kynlee Love, Madison Pence and Reiny Luman four each, Shelby Hayes three and Carli Spears two.
Quitman was without two players, Ava Burroughs out with a concussion and Julia Simpkins who was competing at the state FFA contest in Huntsville.
In a slow-paced game against Spring Hill, Quitman fell behind 12-7 at the half in a game they eventually lost 28-25.
“We waited until the fourth quarter to start playing, made a comeback and had a great opportunity to tie it on a last second three-pointer out of a time out,” Head Coach Blake Hamrick said. “We had no Ava Burroughs and no Julia Simpkins so we were playing pretty short-handed.”
The Lady Bulldogs fell to Jefferson in the third-place game 63-31. After playing close in the first quarter, the talented and swift Jefferson team caused problems for Quitman forcing the Lady Bulldogs into 29 turnovers. Whitehurst led the team with 14 points with Luman adding seven, Love four and Pence two. Burroughs got to see limited action and scored four points and had five rebounds in just 10 minutes of play.
The Lady Bulldogs are on the road at Commerce Friday before going to Lone Oak to start District 12-3A competition Dec. 17.
