It was a real defensive struggle in the first half which turned into an offensive disaster in the second half for the Quitman Lady Bulldogs in their 40-16 loss at Lone Oak last Tuesday.

The teams battled evenly in the first half. Lone Oak had an 8-7 lead after one quarter and went to the dressing room with Quitman down just 15-12. The flood gates opened in the third quarter as the aggressive Lady Buffs went on a 17-2 run to lead 32-14 into the final quarter.

Lone Oak continued playing tough defensive basketball holding Quitman to just two more points in the fourth quarter. The loss dropped the Lady Bulldogs to 2-5 in District 12-3A action and 7-13 for the season. After facing Grand Saline Tuesday at Ballard Memorial Gym, the Lady Bulldogs travel to Edgewood Friday.

Officials let the teams play and did not whistle many fouls. The Lady Bulldogs went to the free throw line four times the entire game. Quitman was 2-4 from the charity stripe.

Shelby Hayes led Quitman scoring with six points followed by Maddy Whitehurst with four. Ava Burroughs, Reiny Luman and Madison Pence each had two points. The Lady Bulldogs had an off night shooting the ball hitting on 7-25 shots for just 28 percent.

Quitman did have 27 rebounds compared to just 15 for Lone Oak. Burroughs had 10 rebounds while Whitehurst added six and Hayes hauled in four. The Lone Oak defense hurried Quitman into rushed passes and numerous jump ball situations forcing the Lady Bulldogs into 26 turnovers.
