Quitman girls capture first district victory

After a pair of district losses, the Quitman Lady Bulldogs put together a solid defensive front and played their way back into playoff contention with a 50-30 romp over Harmony last Tuesday.

The Lady Bulldogs took an 11-8 first quarter lead behind the steady play of senior Reiny Luman, on the boards and near the basket, and freshman Allie Berry on defense. Luman scored six first quarter points and Berry was dominant on defense.

Sophomore Ashley Davis hit a three-point shot with 6:49 left in the second quarter. Sophomore Maddy Pence hit a pair of buckets and Kaysi Parker got busy on the boards to give Quitman a 23-13 lead going into intermission.

Pence and Berry hit triples in the third quarter with Berry putting in six points in the quarter as the Lady Bulldogs took a 37-20 lead into the final period. Quitman scored 14 points to just seven for the Lady Eagles in the fourth quarter. The Lady Bulldogs also hit on seven of eight free throws in the final eight minutes.

Each time Harmony would attempt a run, Quitman’s defensive play would make important stops. Pence, Berry, Parker and Luman each had 10 points in the well-balanced scoring attack.

After hosting their own tournament over the Christmas break, Quitman will get back to Ballard Gym Jan. 4 and resume district play hosting Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill.
