Quitman falls to late comeback

The Quitman Bulldogs came out strong last Thursday night, showing plenty of fight and heart, but a few costly turnovers in the second half allowed the Prairiland Patriots to slip away with a 27-21 win.

Quitman wasted no time setting the tone. The Bulldogs took the opening kickoff and marched downfield with confidence, punching it in for the game’s first touchdown and extra point to take a 7-0 lead. The Patriots answered with a score of their own to tie things up, 7-7, but the Bulldogs’ offense looked sharp early.

After a turnover on a punt gave Prairiland the ball back, Quitman’s defense dug in, forcing a turnover on downs. Unfortunately, a Bulldog interception on the next series gave the Patriots another chance, and they capitalized with a touchdown, though their extra point missed, giving them a narrow 13-7 edge.

Quitman wasn’t about to back down. On the next possession, No. 10 broke loose for a big touchdown run, and the extra point gave the Bulldogs the lead once again at 14-13. The defense then stepped up, stopping the Patriots cold and giving the ball back to the offense. With time winding down in the half, Quitman struck again; another touchdown and extra point stretched the lead to 21-13 with just 13 seconds left before the break.

The second half turned into a grind-it-out defensive battle. Both teams traded punts and turnovers, but a fumble recovery by the Patriots proved costly.

Prairiland converted two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, the first to pull within 21-20 and the second to take the lead.

Quitman had their chances late, driving the ball downfield in hopes of one more rally. However, a late interception ended the comeback bid, sealing the win for Prairiland.

Despite the loss, the Bulldogs showed determination and flashes of dominance on both sides of the ball. With the kind of heart they showed Friday night, there’s plenty of reason for Quitman fans to stay proud and hopeful for the games ahead.
