The Quitman Bulldogs went west to Lipan to take on some of the top basketball schools in the state. In their four games, three opponents were state-ranked. Quitman took on fellow Class 3A team Millsap before tangling with Class A defending state champion and current number one team in the state Slidell, followed by playing 13th ranked Lipan and 21st ranked Saltillo.

After a close first half, the Quitman Bulldogs used a tough defense and an explosive offense to pull away from Millsap in an 82-56 victory in the opening round. The rest of the tournament the Bulldogs had some good moments, but they lost their final three games to last year’s state champion Slidell 59-36

Quitman led only 39-38 at intermission before outscoring Millsap 43-20 in the second half. Jace Reid led Quitman with 37 points while hauling in eight rebounds and capturing six steals. The talented senior hit on five of nine three-point attempts.

Also scoring in double figures was Trey Berry with 15 and Aiden Corrior with 12. Berry also had eight assists while Corrior pulled down six rebounds and handed out four assists. Rylie Flanagan added eight points and brought down six rebounds. Ben Burroughs had four rebounds and three points. Cody Hawley and Hayden Cook each scored two points with River Chaney and Ty Holland each netting one free throw.

“We didn’t defend as well as we could the first half, but we came out in the second half and defended very well. Everyone suited up for the game scored,” Head Coach Jim Reid said.

In the second game against Slidell, Quitman fell behind 29-17 at the half and lost 59-36. Reid led the way with 16 points along with eight steals followed by Berry with nine, Flanagan six and Corrior five. Flanagan added six rebounds.

On Friday, Quitman fell behind Timpson 22-15 at intermission and was down 34-28 going into the final quarter. Reid again led the scoring with 24 points and had seven rebounds along with four steals followed by Berry with nine points and three steals.

In their final game on Saturday, after falling behind 16-7 in the first quarter against Saltillo, the Bulldogs played the Lions on even terms in the 54-48 loss. Quitman was down at the half 30-17 but came back to take a 31-24 second half surge.

Reid had 24 points and 10 rebounds against the Lions with Berry again adding nine points with four steals. Corrior and Flanagan each had six points with Burroughs hitting three.

The Bulldogs are at home this week hosting the Quitman Tournament beginning Thursday and ending Saturday.
