Quitman Development Corp. eyes possible community garden

Posted

The Quitman Development Corporation (QDC) discussed five items but took no action in a short meeting Monday evening. The only vote taken was to approve the consent agenda which included the Dec. 14 minutes and December financials.

The possibility of a community garden located in the big clearing immediately west of the RV park at Jim Hogg City Park was discussed. This would be a whole community-type project, not just something put into action by one particular organization.

“This is something that could take years. It could be started up at the front and add on towards the back. Food banks are always looking for fresh produce,” QDC Executive Director Rodney Kieke said.

The board is trying to get the word out that there is money for sign and façade grants available to Quitman businesses to improve the look and feel of the city. No grants have been approved at this time.

Board members talked about their role in preparation for the future Quilt Festival sponsored by Stitchin’ Heaven being held later this year. It is hoped there will be substantial input by the community for this event.

“There will be a lot of community involvement, not just the QDC, but the Quitman Chamber of Commerce, the Wood County Economic Development Commission (WCEDC) and others,” Kieke explained. “Hopefully in the next couple of weeks we will meet and discuss expectations on what they (Stitchin’ Heaven) need help with outside of parking.”

The board discussed briefly the sale and possible addition of a new business in acreage south of the Red Dome Smokehouse. Kieke also said that a pair of local businesses have closed.

“We did have a couple of businesses shut down. S’mores Trails has closed their doors. Also, the Box Drop Mattress Store has closed,” Kieke said. “I have not heard of any new businesses at this time.” Kieke added he had received phone calls from homebuilders about lot availability to build homes in Quitman.
