Quitman closes out 0-10 campaign

The season ended for the Quitman Bulldogs on a low note, falling to Winona 61-0 on a cold, wintry night. The Bulldog faithful showed up in good numbers to support their team, but it was to no avail as the Wildcats piled up the yardage on the ground and through the air for the victory which propelled them into the state playoffs. The loss gives the Bulldogs an 0-10 season record and 0-7 in district play.

Winona was not to be denied a spot in the upcoming bi-district round as they routed Quitman. Running back Quinn Johnson made quick work of the Quitman defense with shifty and powerful moves scoring the first two times he touched the pigskin on runs of 30 and 37 yards. Johnson ended the first half with 199 yards on eight carries and a trio of touchdowns. Johnson added a score in the second half on a 56-yard run with 8:35 in the game to make it 61-0. The talented and elusive back ended up with almost 300 yards.

Winona went to the air for three of their scores. Quitman could not sustain any consistent movement on offense. There were some good defensive plays, but they were few.

The Bulldogs had to play most of the game, especially the first half, on their end of the field. Quitman was flagged on the opening kick-off and had to start on their own 13-yard line. After an initial first down, it was three and out. A heavy rush caused a short punt and Winona started their offensive night on the Bulldog 30 yard line. That’s when Wildcat Johnson took over, scoring on the first play for Winona.

A penalty on the ensuing kick-off put the Bulldogs in a hole having to start from their own five-yard line. After three plays a Bulldog punt from the end zone gave the Wildcats the ball on the Quitman 37 and Johnson scored again the second time he touched the ball making it a 13-0 game and the route was on.

The Bulldogs put together an impressive drive in the first quarter taking 12 plays to get the ball to the Winona 24 but had to turn it over on downs. Johnson scored again to give Winona a 20-0 first quarter lead.
The Bulldogs have a tough group of juniors who will come back as seniors next season and there is hope in a JV which has gone 6-4 with several impressive wins. The Bulldog JV did secure its sixth win of the year knocking off Winona 44-8. The eighth grade team also won, so the future looks bright in Bulldog country.

District 10-3A D2 ended with Harmony as the district champ, followed by runner-up Grand Saline, third place Troup and fourth place Winona. Frankston was a game behind Winona in fifth while Alba-Golden and Quitman were sixth and seventh in district.
