Quitman calf scramblers catch their prey at Houston Livestock Show
Quitman FFA members Alexis O’Neal and Parker Simpkins were among the winners at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Calf Scramble, catching a calf April 17-18 in Katy.
During this highly competitive event, both earned a $1,750 certificate to be used to purchase a registered beef heifer or steer.
Their show sponsors are Alan and Miriam Clayton of Bryan, donors that sponsored the award to Alexis, and Charles G. Hooks, IV, of Houston, Parker’s sponsor.
Alexis is the daughter of Bryan and Kylie O’Neal, and Parker is the son of David and Vanessa Simpkins.
They will use their certificates to buy a registered beef heifer to raise and exhibit at the 2022 Houston Livestock Show. They have also earned the chance to compete for scholarships.
Throughout the year, if they meet certain criteria, they will also have the potential to earn a $500 bonus. During the process, they will provide monthly reports, develop breed essays and write a business plan and a final essay to be submitted to their sponsors and the Calf Scramble Committee.
