The Quitman Bulldogs split a pair of district baseball contests during spring break.

Bulldog pitchers Landon Richey and Tommy Drinkwine stopped Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill combining for 14 strikeouts and allowing  five hits in Quitman‘s 2-1 win. Richey dominated Red Devil batters striking out 12 while claiming the win. Drinkwine came on in relief in the final inning to earn a save, striking out two and shutting down Red Devil batters.

The Bulldog defense continues their improvement, making solid fundamental plays and having only one error in the game.

The Bulldogs got all the runs they needed when Justin Matthews’ bat brought in two runs in the bottom of the second inning on a fielder’s choice. Chapel Hill scored a run in the top of the third inning, but Quitman pitching took control and the Red Devils could not score again. 

The Red Devil’s Cole Ellis also did a fine job on the mound, holding Quitman to two hits, both by Mason Reynolds.

The Bulldogs got into a hitting contest at Winnsboro last Thursday with the Red Raiders taking a 14-10 win that saw the teams combine for 26 hits. 

Winnsboro took a 5-0 lead after three innings, but Quitman stormed back with five runs in the top of the fourth to make it 5-5. The Raiders came back with three more runs in their half of the inning to take an 8-5 lead.

Quitman tied the game again at 8-8 with a productive fifth inning, but Winnsboro answered with two runs to take a 10-8 lead.

The Bulldogs fought their way to a 10-10 stalemate in the top of the sixth inning. Once again, the Raiders came back in their half of the inning for four runs to give them the 14-10 district win.

Reynolds once again led the Quitman offense with four hits in five at bats. Teammates Richey and Jack Tannebaum each had a pair of hits. 

After a Tuesday home game against Mineola, the Bulldogs travel to Winona on Friday for a 7 p.m. game against the Wildcats.
