QISD board could call bond election for May
The QISD Long Range Facility committee, which comprises 35 members, including parents, alumni, business owners and students – has conducted a districtwide facilities tour and recommended six priority projects for Quitman ISD.
Its finding were presented to the school board on Dec. 16.
The six projects are adding elementary and junior high classrooms, updating the girls’ locker rooms, building a Career Tech Center, building a new field house and constructing a new baseball field.
The total for the six facility improvement projects comes to $30.86 million.
In order to pay for the recommended projects, the board may call a bond election in early February to fund the projects, to be held May 3.
If adopted, the bond would result in a 12-15 cent property tax increase, adding less than $200 annually for the average taxpayer, according to QISD Superintendent Chris Mason.
The district received a perfect score of 100 on the Financial Integrity Rating System (FIRST) report. This is the sixth year in a row for QISD to receive a perfect score. The 2023-2024 financial audit also came back with no issues.
Mason recognized QISD Director of Finance Kari Wilson and her team for their exceptional work.
The Top Dog award was given to the Wood County Hospital Board of Directors “for their support in providing mental health and social-emotional counseling to over 65 QISD students through a partnership with the Andrews Center.”
Pledges were led by 8th-grade students Kaxon Bender and Gavin Gilbreath.
Before their regularly scheduled meeting, the board also held a special meeting for training, a “Team of 8” workshop. The facilitator for the special meeting was Dr. Drew Howard with the Region 7 Educational Service Center.
