QISD board adjusts calendar
Quitman school board trustees approved changes Monday to the school calendar for next year. School will begin Aug. 17 and graduation will be May 21, 2021. An additional 10 minutes will be added to the school day which will begin at 7:45 a.m.
Superintendent Rhonda Turner said, “We really wanted to stay as true to the original calendar as a normal school year as we could for our community. Basically trading Aug. 17 and 18 which were staff development days for instructional days and adding 10 minutes bought us those extra days. The target date for the end of school is May 21. The only reason it would move is if we had to miss eight or 10 days and had to make those days up.”
The board approved the purchase for a livestock trailer which can handle the smaller animals such as pigs and goats. The trailer will be purchased from Co-op Trailers for $28,260. Agriculture instructor Brant Lee said the participation in the ag program had increased considerably, and with more students showing animals the trailer was needed. The money for the trailer is in the agriculture budget.
Turner presented a plaque honoring Mary Ann Nichols for her years of service to the QISD. The board also honored Vinnie Bass and her nutrition team for earning “Best of the Bunch” from the Texas Dept. of Agriculture. The award noted the Quitman effort for teaching healthy lifestyles and using local food sources.
In other matters the board approved:
• The purchase of an elementary school reading curriculum for $21,662.03 from Heineman-Fountas & Pinnell.
• The implementation of leave under the Families First Coronavirus Act.
• Filing of a low attendance day waiver for Jan. 17, 2020.
• Student accident renewal contracts for 2020-21 school year.
