Post honored on 100th anniversary
A pair of proclamations issued by the city of Mineola last week included a 100-year-old local institution and focusing attention on a serious problem here and throughout the nation.
Mayor Kevin White proclaimed March 25 as American Legion Post 296 of Mineola Day in recognition of the post’s 100th anniversary. The Luckett Cochran Post was established March 25, 1921 some two and a half years after the end of World War One.
The proclamation noted the posts’ role in hosting the annual Memorial Day Parade and co-hosting the Veterans Day Parade.
White presented the proclamation at a special gathering at the post last Thursday.
The National Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month proclamation is offered each year to remind citizens of their role in recognizing and reporting suspected child abuse.
Many other organizations have offered similar proclamations.
White called for all citizens to dedicate themselves to the task of improving the quality of life for all children and families.
The council also approved a recommendation to name one of the equestrian trails at the Mineola Nature Preserve in honor of local country music celebrity Kacey Musgraves.
The request came from the Texas Equestrian Trail Riders Association, which holds regular events at the preserve and cited Musgraves as a horse enthusiast who advocates for equestrian activities.
TETRA plans to have signs marking the previously unnamed trail.
