North Hopkins broke open a tight game in the final minutes to secure a 46-41 win over the Quitman Lady Bulldogs Tuesday at Ballard Memorial Gym. The loss dropped Quitman to 4-3.

The Lady Panthers’ Miracle Ramon scored nine of her game high 22 points in the final five minutes. The game was close throughout with neither team getting more than a seven point lead.

Quitman started quick out of the gate with a pair of buckets and a free throw by Ava Burroughs for a 5-0 lead. North Hopkins fought back with the next three baskets to take a 6-5 edge. Quitman went ahead on a put-back by Julia Simpkins. The first quarter ended when Burroughs scored three points the old-fashioned way hitting a bucket, getting fouled and making the charity toss to give Quitman a 12-10 first quarter lead.

The second quarter was a back and forth affair with Quitman gaining a 21-15 advantage on a Madison Pence three-point shot. Quitman took the largest lead of the night at 23-16 on a pair of Simpkins free throws. The Lady Panthers’ Ramon hit a bucket as time ran out in the first half making the score 23-20 with Quitman leading at the half.

Lindsay Hornaday gave the Lady Bulldogs a third quarter spark hitting for six points, but Ramon came back with two late free throws to cut the Quitman lead to just 32-31.

In the fourth quarter, Shelby Hayes hit a free throw to knot the score at 38-38 with 3:30 left. The Lady Panthers’ Ramon took over from there hitting a crucial shot and three big free throws leading to the North Hopkins win.

Burroughs suffered a head injury in the third quarter and was held out the final eight minutes. She finished with 10 points as did Simpkins. Maddy Whitehurst, Pence and Hornaday each had six points with Reiny Luman, Kylie Love and Hayes each hitting a free throw.

The Quitman girls were scheduled to play Boles at home Tuesday and will travel to Spring Hill this weekend for tournament play.
