Mt. Vernon rolls past Mineola Lady Jackets

The high-water mark for the Mineola Lady Jackets comeback against the hosting Mt. Vernon Lady Tigers came just before the end of the third quarter.

Carmen Carrasco backed her defender down, turned and put up a beautiful short-range jumper off the glass. It cut the deficit to six points, but would also be as close as the Lady Jackets would get.

The Lady Tigers outscored Mineola by 15 points in the final quarter to secure a convincing 62-39 win.

Until that last quarter, the Lady Jackets were very much in the game. Especially early, the Lady Jackets zone defense was quicker than the Mt. Vernon offense. The aggressive defensive play coupled with the productive Mineola press carried much of the first quarter action.

Timely long-range shooting by the hosts accounted for Mt. Vernon’s 16-11 lead after one quarter of play.

A 7-point run by the Lady Tigers opened the lead as the game neared halftime. In the last three minutes of the half, the Lady Tigers applied a full court press – the only press Mt. Vernon employed on the night.

The Lady Jackets mustered only five points in that second quarter. Despite generating turnovers, Mineola gave away as many as they forced. At the half, Mt. Vernon lead 28-16.

Mineola had one of their best quarters of the season coming out after halftime.  Court awareness and offensive creativity allowed the Lady Jackets to climb back into the game.

Everything would have to go right, however, for the Lady Jackets to steal this game.

Two disturbing indicators were the ability of the hosts to drive the length of the floor through the Mineola press and Mt. Vernon scoring after stealing two Mineola inbound play passes.

It was the conversion of one of those stolen inbound plays which sparked the offensive onslaught from Mt. Vernon. They put-up 23 points in the final quarter as the momentum had swung decisively to the home side.

The Lady Jackets are yet eyeing a playoff spot as district play nears conclusion. After hosting Winnsboro, Tuesday, they wrap up their district play Friday at Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill.
