Mt. Vernon rolls past Lady Jackets

The Mt. Vernon Lady Tigers came to Mineola last Tuesday and travelled home with a dominating 20-5 win. The visitors’ bats were simply too heavy as they pounded the Lady Jacket pitching. Mineola could muster only one significant rally on the blustery night, sending nine hitters to the plate in the third for a four-run inning.

The Lady Tigers started slow but managed to put up one run in the first behind two bases on balls and a run-scoring single.

In the top of the second, Mt. Vernon put four additional runs on the board behind the power of back-to-back triples. A throwing error converted one triple into an inside the park home run. After two innings, the Lady Tigers were up 5-0.

Mt. Vernon continued the offensive production in the third, blasting four base hits to score five runs.

Down 10-0 going into the bottom of the third, the Lady Jackets had to rally, and they did. Brittany Pickle led off and earned a base on balls. Kenleigh Aguirre then beat-out an infield single, and Emily Wiley reached on an infield error, which also scored Pickle.

The gusting winds aided Lauren Simmons with a base hit from what should have been a routine catch, and Aguirre scored. Wiley came home on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Jaycee Smith. In the finest piece of hitting for the Jackets on the night, Alana Galaz took an 0-and-2 pitch to right-center field driving in the fourth and final run of the rally.

Mt. Vernon answered with five runs off four hits in the fourth to stretch the lead to 15-4. Mineola mustered one run in the bottom half. Carmyn Heim laced a ball into the right field corner for a stand-up triple. She scored on Aguirre’s infield hit.

Despite the scoreboard, the Lady Jackets had some stellar moments. Aguirre had an outstanding game and had two notable plays. In the first she had a clean steal of second base and did it with a great head-first slide. Defensively, her aggressive fielding of a single into center and an excellent throw back into the infield prevented a Mt. Vernon score with two runners in scoring position.

Alyssa Lankford likewise had a stand-out night. She made an excellent catch in left field in the second inning to close out a Mt. Vernon rally. The catch was made on the run and backing toward the left-center field gap. She made it over her left shoulder at full pace. In the third, she just missed a diving highlight-reel catch as she closed a line drive in short left field.

The Lady Jackets closed out their season Friday at Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill.
