Monthly sales tax income falls for all county cities

Every entity in Wood County that collects sales taxes saw lower revenues in April than the prior year.

But none of those declines were enough to cause the seven governments to have lower income for the year.

The seven had combined revenues in April $659,867, down about $45,000 from a year ago when $704,908 was received.

The April report from the Texas comptroller’s office is primarily for taxes collected on retail sales in February and reported to the state in March.

The state rebates cities, counties and others their shares monthly.

For the first four months of the year, the entities have earned $3,185,080. At this time last year their combined income was $3,061,651.

The six cities collect a 1.5% tax on retail sales, in addition to the 6.25% state sales tax.

Wood County collects an additional half-cent sales tax for a total tax rate of 8.25% in cities.

The city of Alba received $25,489 in April 2025 compared to $25,909 in April 2024 for a 1.62% drop. For the year the city has earned $133,839, a gain of 16.24% from a year ago when income totaled $115,135.

Hawkins received a $35,411 rebate for April, a loss of 3.5% from last year when $36,697 was received. For the year the city’s income of $176,245 is up 10.48% from a year ago when the total receipts were $159,524.

Mineola’s April rebate of $211,036 is down 8.43% from a year ago when $230,489 was collected. That brought the 2025 total to $1,028,911, a gain of 2.77% from $1,001,175.

Quitman saw its April rebate fall 6.35% from a year ago – $66,098 to $70,584. The 2025 total of $316,550 is up by 4.46% from 2024 when $303,008 was generated.

Winnsboro had a 2.26% drop for April from $104,514 to $102,146. The total this year of $475,074 is up 1.92% from last year’s $466,123.

Yantis had a rebate of $9,452 in April, down 12.03% from last year’s $10,745. For the year Yantis has seen an 8.2% gain, from $49,959 to $54,057.

Wood County saw a 6.96% decline in April, $225,967 compared to $210,233. For the year the county has received $1,000,401, up from $966,724 last year.
