The life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be celebrated in Mineola on the day he is honored across the nation Monday, Jan. 20.

The Mineola Ministerial Alliance will host a Unity in Our Community service at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, 304 Stone St.

Cody Mize will be the guest speaker. He serves as superintendent of Mineola schools as well as pastor of Cartwright Baptist Church.

The choirs of St. Paul MBC and First Baptist Church will provide music, and a MLK speech will be presented by a student from an area college.

The theme of this year’s service is “Keeping God First.”

“One way to ensure that we as a nation, a country, counties and communities continue to positively move forward in unity, peace and understanding in all aspects of life is to keep God first,” said St. Paul MBC pastor Demethrius Boyd. “It is my prayer that we set the benchmark here in our town, our community and our county as to what unity, peace and love for one another looks like. Let it begin with us, and let it begin with you.”

Following the service a noon meal of soups and hot-water cornbread will be served.
