Mineola takes advantage of miscues

The Mineola Yellowjackets took advantage of some free passes issued by Gladewater pitching to put up five runs in the first inning and held on to win 5-3 over the visiting Bears last Monday.

Gladewater hit the ball hard to start the game, scoring twice in the top of the first with two doubles and a single. The damage could have been worse after the lead-off hitter singled. The second Bear hitter of the night lined a shot to right where Jack Heard was waiting. He made the catch and rifled the ball back to first which doubled the runner trying to return to the base.

The Jackets leveraged two walks, four batsmen hit by pitches and a Gladewater fielding error to push five runs across in the bottom of the inning.

Kaden Bell accounted for two of those RBIs with a two-strike single to right field.

Gladewater put a nice sequence together in the third to add a run. An infield hit, a stolen base and a double concluded the scoring.

The Jackets left nine men on base after that five-run first inning but could generate no more scoring.

Although catcher Coy Anderson had another great catch back by the screen, the play of the night had to be Thomas Hooton’s catch in center field to start the sixth inning.

The ball was rocketed off the bat of the lead-off Gladewater Bear. Hooton had a split-second to decide to make a play for the ball or back off and play the bounce. He took about four rapid strides in and toward the gap in right before leaping forward. Laying out at full extension, he took the hard liner just off the top of the grass.

For Mineola, Kaden Bell threw seven innings, giving up seven hits, recording four strike outs and issuing one free pass.

The Yellowjackets look to continue their disciplined play Friday at Quitman.

Mineola 20, Winona 6

Last Friday the Yellowjackets routed Winona 20-6.

After grabbing a 3-0 lead in the first, Mineola turned over the lineup twice with 17 scores in the second.

Winona got a single run in the bottom of the inning and added five in the fifth.

Winona gave up 12 hits and committed seven errors while getting six hits.

Riley Fowler had three hits, and Cason Davis and Caleb Gant each had two. Kaden Bell reached three times on walks.

Seth Joyner threw three innings with three strikeouts, and Braydon Alley and Jack Heard came on in relief.
