Mineola Sound of the Swarm top rated again
Continuing its trend of excellent musicianship, Mineola Bands earned top spots in the Outstanding Performance Series (OPS) sponsored by the Association of Texas Small School Bands.
The final results last week ranked Mineola High School’s Sound of the Swarm as the best performance for a march among Class 3A schools in the state and third with its concert piece.
Bands submit videos of their performances for judging, and then advance through region and area rounds to make it to the state level.
The Mineola Middle School band also fared well in the competition, taking second place in the march competition and third with its concert selection.
The high school band has been earning top spots in recent years.
The 2020 contest was canceled. In 2019 MHS was first in concert performance and third with its march. Mineola was second in concert and fourth in march in 2018. In 2017 both Mineola concert pieces were judged first and second while its march placed third.
The Sound of the Swarm is also the two-time defending state champion in the marching contest, which is scheduled to be held again this fall.
It is the reigning Texas Music Educators Association honor band for 2020, after placing fourth in 2018.
