Mineola mixed team, single advance
Quitman hosted the district tennis tournament last week, starting midday Wednesday after some morning rain delayed the start, concluding Thursday.
Wind was a factor through many of the matches, putting a premium on solid strikes that could penetrate the gusts that pushed many a lob shot easily a dozen feet sideways. An ability to adjust proved vital, and players who could not get overly flustered by the blustery air prevailed.
Harmony won the girls title and overall district championship, with their boys coming in second to Chapel Hill.
Mineola’s Hunter Wernecke earned second place in boys singles and advances to the regional tournament in Tyler April 11–12.
Also qualifying for region is the Mineola mixed doubles team of Sunni Ruffin and Jack Heard, who won a tough playback match against Marquis Ivory and Tennison Stephens of Winnsboro, 7–5, 6–4.
Savannah Lopez of Mineola placed 3rd in girls singles and is the first alternate for the regional tournament.
Quitman freshman Enrique Olvera finished fourth in boys singles.
Austin Tanner and Ethan Reynolds got fourth place in the boys doubles.
