Lots of things happening in April. We had a very successful bake sale thanks to City National Bank and all who baked and bought. We appreciate CNB for putting this on for us.

There is a potential for a book sale on Saturday, April 17. As always, the sale depends on the weather and volunteers. Sales are by donation and we carry no change. There is very large box marked donations in which to deposit your donation. Suggested amounts are posted around the sale and on the donation box. You can pick up some bargains at our book sale and support the library.

Coming up on April 22 at 7 p.m. is a program called Leading with Literacy. It is a fundraiser for those who work with literacy. Tickets are $40 for the one-hour event, and it will feature Way With Words hosts Martha and Grant, John Quinones, Cynthia Izaguirre, and Krys Boyd from KERA’s Think! Program. If you prefer to donate only, there is a button for that, too. Here is the link if you are interested: https://www.literacytexas.org.

Also coming up in April is East Texas Giving Day on April 27. This is an 18-hour fundraising event for non-profits in the East Texas area. The Mineola Memorial Library is participating in this as well. Go to www.easttexasgivingday.org then find Mineola Memorial Library and make a donation. There are other local non-profits, too. Once you decide on an amount, you complete the transaction. This is the first year for the library to participate in the fundraiser which is in its sixth year.

Perhaps you have noticed changes happening on the exterior of the Mineola Memorial Library. Eagle Scout candidate Zackary Davenport of Troop 385 is removing the old holly bushes and painting the window and building trim and painting the porches. We cannot wait to see the finished project.

In the library, look for the Smithsonian poster display about women inventors. This is a program from the Smithsonian that we were lucky enough to receive and display. If the weather cooperates, we will have it outside.

The East Texas Library Friends Book Club is reading “How to Start a Fire” by Lisa Lutz. Join us on Saturday, April 17 at 2 p.m. for a lively discussion and to select the next books for club members to read. Or you can find the group on goodreads.com under the group East Texas Library Friends.

Remember, the Mineola Memorial Library is a 501(c)3, non-profit and your donation may be tax-deductible.
