Mineola banks win over Commerce

Mineola hosted Commerce on Friday, taking down the Tigers handily, 68-40.

The Yellowjackets sprinted to a 9-0 lead.

The score was 18-7 after one quarter.

Mineola went on another run, this time for 13 points in a row.

The shorthanded Commerce squad, which suited up just six players, started competing to close out the first half. They hit a few threes, including one at the buzzer, and seemed like they could possibly hang with the Yellowjackets, despite Mineola's commanding lead of 38-22 at the break.

The Yellowjacket defense came out of the lockerroom ready to pounce, holding the Tigers to just two field goals in the next eight minutes of play.

Sophomore guard TJ Moreland had the hot hand on the other end, hitting four-of-six threes in the third quarter. Shooting eight-for-nine from the free throw line and hitting six total from downtown added up to 34 points, leading all scorers.

Jonah Fischer and Aidan Steward tacked on 11 and nine points, respectively.

Andrew Stinchfield and Hunter VanDover each contributed a three-point shot.

Football standout Trevion Sneed returned to the hardcourt for his senior year after playing soccer last season. Sneed added seven points and five rebounds. Also with five boards was Dawson Pendergrass, who scored one point.
