Miller Grove takes 3-of-4 from A-G
The Lady Hornets of Miller Grove came to Alba-Golden last Tuesday and stole the opening district match against the Lady Panthers. Alba-Golden fell in a four-set match 19-25, 21-25, 25-21, 23-25.
The Lady Hornets consistently played at a high level in the first two sets. Excellent setting and striking were the hallmarks of their first set win.
With the visitors leading 12-9, the home side needed a run of points. Skyler West’s service turn and Kaylee Anglin’s striking ability provided it, and Alba-Golden took a 15-12 lead.
It wouldn’t last. Following a Miller Grove time out, the visitors registered seven of the next eight points. It was the Miller Grove offense which finished the first set. They closed with five strong offensive scores.
Having captured the momentum, Miller Grove jetted out to a big lead in the second set. To their great credit, the Lady Panthers overcame a 10-20 deficit to close the score to 20-22.
Anglin and West figured prominently in the comeback, exchanging successful kills. Kalli Trimble and Erin Langston also made significant contributions. The comeback occurred under the service turns of Langston and Cacie Lennon.
It wasn’t enough, as Miller Grove finished the second set with a drop shot and an ace.
The third set was the most consistent of the night. The Lady Panthers built a six-point advantage and led 21-16. Anglin and West provided most of the fireworks. Miller Grove roared back and tied the game at 21. A West service ace helped finish the set in Alba-Golden’s favor.
With the fourth set, fatigue set in on both sides. Unforced errors scored over half of the total points in the set. The Lady Panthers, however, persevered, leading by as much as seven points. With Alba-Golden leading 21-17, five consecutive errors erased the lead. The streak was broken by an emphatic Lennon smash.
With the score tied at 23, an Alba-Golden handling error gave Miller Grove the advantage. They secured the match with a cross-court kill.
The next chances to catch the Lady Panthers will be Friday, Sept. 17 at Fruitvale (4:30 p.m.) and Tuesday, Sept. 21 at home against PTAA (6:00 p.m.).
