Sheriff’s Department welcomes new friend
The Wood County Sheriff's Department added a new deputy to its search and rescue team last week.
Copper, an eight-weekold Bloodhound puppy, is the first member of the department's newly founded search and rescue team. Sheriff Jim Brown stated in a press release that Copper will assist the department in finding lost people and tracking criminals, once he's had some training.
"If just one child or elderly person is saved, the program will be worth all of the effort," Brown said. "This program will be an asset that will benefit the entire area as Copper and his other teammates will assist where needed."
Copper is registered with the American Kennel Club, which means he is a purebred Bloodhound. The dogs are used by police all over the country and are known for their superior sense of smell. Bloodhounds can pick up a scent trail that is more than 48 hours old, according to the National Police Bloodhound Association's website.
