Meeting set for countywide mural project

Posted

Calling all artists!

There is a new art focused economic development project in Wood County called Wood County Walls. The concept is based on the creation of murals and other public art across the county to create an art loop that runs through Mineola, Hawkins, Winnsborro, Quitman, Yantis and Alba.

“Explore. Interact. Linger” is the tag line for the project. The goal is for people to explore the art in the county, interact with the art by getting out of their cars and taking selfies and then linger in the communities getting to know the artists, shops, restaurants and other offerings.

The Flint & Steel Coalition is heading up the project with support from the Wood County Economic Development Commission and participating communities.

The project began last year with the Unity Wall in Mineola across from the train depot. Efforts are underway to organize each community to expand the inventory of public art.

An organizational meeting of the Wood County Walls Artist Guild will be held on Tuesday, March 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Winnsborro Art Center Annex.

At the meeting the project will be discussed, talking about ways to support artists to create murals and other public art, as well as discuss the creation of the East Texas Muralist Festival coming this fall.
