Mineola native James Tatum performed at a reception held for him by the Mineola Historical Museum and Mineola Memorial Library.
Tatum played several songs on the piano and even asked the audience to chime in at times.
Tatum made a profession for himself as a contemporary jazz artist in Detroit, Michigan where he started The James Tatum Foundation for the Arts in 1987. The foundation is dedicated to providing artistically talented Michigan youth important developmental opportunities and scholarships.
Since the opening of the foundation over 565 students have been given scholarships, amounting to over $373,000.
At the end of the reception Mineola Mayor Kevin White presented Tatum with a plaque naming July 6 James Tatum Day.
“My goal is to bring culture to the community,” said Tatum. “I consider all of you my family.”
