Wood County groups began announcements late last week about community events that are being canceled or postponed in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Many events canceled, postponed

Wood County groups began announcements late last week about community events that are being canceled or postponed in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

In addition, churches modified or canceled weekend services, and many live streamed services for those who did not want to attend.

Among the modifications were not passing the collection plate and forgoing the usual periods of greetings/fellowship.

The Quitman Chamber of Commerce has postponed the Dogwood Fiesta until further notice. It was scheduled March 20-22.

The Mineola Chamber of Commerce has postponed its annual awards banquet scheduled for March 26.

Junk in the Trunk sale March 21 at the Mineola Civic Center is canceled.

The Lake Country Symphonic Band canceled its first concerts of the new season, scheduled Sunday and Tuesday, March 15 and 17, at the Historic Select Theater.

The Mineola Pilot Club has postponed its murder mystery benefit that was scheduled for March 28.

Lake Country Classics Car Club canceled its Monday meeting, as well as car shows Saturday (21st) and Thursday (26th) in Quitman.

The annual Farm and Ranch Day for special kids that was planned April 24 in Golden has been canceled.

Major retailers have temporarily adjusted store hours to allow additional time for restocking and cleaning.

Several food establishments are switching to take-out only service.

The Mineola Friends of the Library will not have its monthly book sale in March.

The Mineola Memorial Library announced it was canceling all programs.

The Quitman Public Library announced it would be closing on Tuesday.

The Forever Young Activity Center in Quitman said it would close indefinitely.

Mineola League of the Arts is closed this week and all activities canceled.

The Wood County Republican Party, and county parties around the state, were scheduled to hold county conventions Saturday, March 21. But those have been postponed until May on a date to be announced later. The state convention May 11-16 will be held sometime in July.

The Mineola Historical Museum is closed until further notice.

Local civic clubs are also curbing their weekly meetings and activities.
