Little Free Library joins Iron Horse Square park
Leave it to a bunch of retired teachers.
As Janell Abbott was listing the benefits and accomplishments for the new Reading Railroad at Iron Horse Square that was dedicated on Saturday in Mineola, Joyce Williams chimed in about plans for a canopy only to learn that it was what Abbott had next on her list to announce.
Abbott said they had the idea for a Reading Railroad at the train-themed park but were not sure how to accomplish it.
That’s when welder Robbie Ballard came aboard.
“He knew what to do,” she said.
Ballard crafted the train engine from two repurposed newspaper racks to give the little free library a weather-proof holder for books.
He also is responsible for much of the metal work throughout the park and donated a bench next to the bright red reading engine.
Abbott said they sought grants for the project, including Alpha State Texas Educational Foundation, Martin Marietta and Chuck Harris for the concrete slab and MPrints for the decals.
Next will come fundraisers to pay for the canopy.
The little free library is sponsored by Epsilon Gamma, the Wood County chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International, a professional society of women educators.
