Summer fun has returned to Lake Hawkins RV Park in the southeastern part of Wood County. Pct. 3 Commissioner Mike Simmons said the park reopened on June 30.
“Right now the beach and swimming are free. Probably, in the weeks to come, we will start charging some type of small fee in order to try and cover the costs of having the beach open,” Simmons noted.
There were no bids submitted by anyone wanting to independently lease the facility during a recent commissioners meeting, so the item was tabled.
“The bid process is being revamped. We are reworking the contract,” Simmons commented. “We hope by the next commissioners court (July 14) we can approve this new process and get it out for people to look at and submit proposals. That is what we are working on right now. The document is being refined at this time.”
“I go through the RV section and collect the money myself. Every day we have to mow and remove trash. We have a temporary employee who is doing that now,” Simmons added.
The beach is free for now, but RVs ($22) and tent campers ($10) will be charged and Simmons said it is cash only at this time. Spaces and campsites are on a first-come first-serve basis.
