Lake Country Symphonic Band Christmas concert cancelled

The Lake Country Symphonic Band announced Thursday afternoon that Sunday's concert is canceled due to potential COVID-19 exposure.

Get the holidays kicked off in a merry musical fashion this weekend.

The Lake Country Symphonic Band will present its annual Christmas concert Sunday afternoon, Dec. 6, at the Mineola Civic Center at 2 p.m., with doors opening to the public at 1:15. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children 11 and under. Call the Historic Select Theater, 903-569-2300, to make reservations.

Following closely on the heels of the band’s successful fall concert, A Festival of Carols will feature a variety of holiday favorites from traditional settings to jazz and swing. Included on the program are Leroy Anderson’s perennial favorite “Sleigh Ride,” a dramatic arrangement of “Green Sleeves,” a jazz rendition of Prokofiev’s Troika titled “Midnight Sleighride,” a medley of over 20 seasonal tunes in just over three and a half minutes called “Christmas in a Nutshell” and a swinging “Jingle Bells” that sounds more like Benny Goodman’s “Sing, Sing, Sing.”

These and other pieces will be performed during a concert that will delight all ages and leave the audience with a song or 10 in their heart when it’s over.

Concessions will be available by the Sound of the Swarm Booster Club, benefitting the Mineola High School Band.

The Lake Country Symphonic Band is an all-volunteer ensemble made up of musicians ranging in age from 14 to 82 and coming from as far away as Palestine to participate. Rehearsals are Thursday nights from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Mineola Middle School band room.

The Mineola Civic Center is located at 1150 North Newsom Street, in Mineola. Reservations are strongly encouraged.
