Lady Jackets defeat Lady Bulldogs
It was a packed house Friday night as the Mineola Lady Jackets held off Quitman in a low scoring defensive battle. The 35-29 win gave Mineola a clear track to at least the fourth playoff spot in the district.
Mineola dominated the first quarter and appeared to be on their way to a route taking a 15-3 lead after the first eight minutes. Macy Fischer got the scoring started hitting a triple followed by Quitman’s Kaysi Parker with a field goal.
Lady Jacket Kyra Jackson hit another three followed by free throws from Mylee Fischer extending the Mineola lead to 8-2. Parker followed with a free throw to make it 8-3 and that was all the Lady Bulldogs scored in the quarter. Mineola added a lay-up by Jayla Jackson and five points, including a triple, by Kapri Riley giving the Lady Jackets a commanding 15-3 lead.
The second quarter was all defense as Quitman held the Lady Jackets to one free throw by Macy Fischer. Quitman scoring was led by Ashley Davis who made a short jump shot and a trey for five points and Allie Berry added a free throw. Mineola led 16-12 at the half.
It continued to be a defensive battle in the third quarter with Mineola getting six points from Kyra Jackson and two from Macy Fischer. Quitman got a lay-up from Maddy Pence and a pair of free throws from Parker. Going into the final stanza Mineola held a 24-16 advantage.
In the fourth quarter, Mineola enjoyed its biggest lead, 34-24, with 2:50 to play. They got that lead on a pair of triples from twins Kyra and Jayla Jackson and a steal and score from Mylee Fischer.
Quitman freshman Berry was not to be denied as she hit on two long distance triples and a jump shot for the Lady ‘Dogs. Quitman’s Davis also hit a trey in the quarter and Parker added two free throws. A pair of Parker free throws late in the game made the final tally 35-29.
Berry led Quitman with 10 points and Parker added eight. For Mineola, Kyra Jackson led scorers with 12.
