The Quitman Lady Bulldogs are repeat district cross-country champions. With Braleigh Woods taking the blue ribbon and four runners finishing in the top ten, the Lady Bulldogs had a stellar day at the 13-3A district meet Saturday in Quitman.

Woods, who finished with a time of 12 minutes, 15.4 seconds in the 2-mile run, ran a strong race, taking the lead at the halfway mark and stretching her lead throughout. Teammates Katie Degorotiza (13:03.5), McKenna Wood (13:20.4), and Kendall Davis (13:24.9) were also among the top ten finishers.

Bonnie Vanderschaaf (14:49.8), Amanita Bactista (15:05.8), and Rebekah Presley (15:36.1) rounded out the Quitman squad.

The Lady Jackets of Mineola were not far behind. They captured an overall second place finish on the strength of Olivia Hughes’ 12:39.3 mark. Hughes finished second to Woods on the day.

Lady Jackets Raylie Peebles (13:31.3), Shylah Kratzmeyer (13:44.2), Yareli Hernandez (14:14.6) and Jaylee Nevarez (14:23.6) completed the race in the top twelve. Desiree Gandy posted a 16:41.7 time.

While the boys teams of Quitman and Mineola did not repeat their achievements of 2021, they both performed well. The Bulldogs finished with a third-place team ranking, while the Yellowjackets finished in fifth.

David Soto of Winnsboro continued his stellar year. He took the blue ribbon with a time of 16:23.3 in the 5,000 meters. Shortly after cruising across the tape, Soto – who has breathing quite normally – remarked that the race “was a good shake-out for regionals.”

Dakota Jimenez (17:04.4) and Christian Plata (17:47.8), both of Quitman, joined Mineola’s Cris Alejo (17:55.5) in the top ten racers.

Additional runners for Mineola and Quitman were Fernal Ventura (18:35.3), Ryan Widemon (18:43.8), Bryan Torrez (18:47.4), Tristan Wells (18:50.4), Noah Reid (19:13.9), Alex Reyes (19:28.1), Noah Emmons (19:44.2), Daniel Santos (20:03.5) and Saul Flores Franco (20:58.3).
