Lady Dogs take care of Grand Saline
The Quitman Lady Bulldogs took care of Grand Saline in district volleyball action Tuesday fighting off a tough Lady Indian squad in four sets.
The first two sets each went into extra time with Quitman taking both by the slimmest of margins 26-24 and 29-27. Grand Saline fought back to take the third set 20-25, but Quitman shook off that loss and came back to record a 25-18 final set victory.
Coach Ashlee Lingo was pleased with the ladies performance. “I thought the girls played well. It was a tough game. Grand Saline has a great defense,” Lingo said. “I am so glad our girls stayed aggressive and pushed through with a victory.”
Senior Jentri Jackson continued her consistent play with great offense (17 kills) and aggressive defense recording 18 digs. She added a pair of aces on serves and had one block. Julia Simpkins had 10 kills and five digs while middle blocker Ava Burroughs had 11 kills, three aces and two blocks. Shelby Hayes had nine digs, two aces and an amazing 44 assists. Lucy Brannon had 24 digs in the backcourt and added five kills while Maddy Whitehurst racked up seven digs and five kills, Savannah Breding 14 digs and Lindsey Hornaday 13 digs.
Strong net play up front from Jackson, Burroughs and Simpkins, along with extra effort in the back court for digs, were keys to the team effort victory.
With the win, Quitman stays on course for a playoff run. The Lady Bulldogs are 2-0 in district 12-3A and 12-19 overall for the season.
