Lady Bulldogs pull out a nail-biter

Quitman traveled Monday to Harmony to face the Lady Eagles. After leading much of the first half, the Quitman Lady Bulldogs played from behind in the latter periods.

It wasn’t until one minute remaining that they took back over the scoreboard, when freshman Ashley Davis made a three-pointer to put them ahead 32–31.

A few rebounds and some hard-nosed defense, including a blocking foul by Maddy Pence which saw her impact the floor jarringly, held Harmony scoreless in the final 60 seconds to secure the district win.

“That was the first time all of those girls have been in a situation where there’s less than a minute left and you have to close out and finish the game,” said coach Blake Hamrick, who was attempting to instill his team with the mentality needed for close-fought wins.

“When it comes around again, we’ll know what to do,” he said.

Ava Burroughs had two blocks plus 16 of Quitman’s 34 rebounds.

Their next match up is at Como-Pickton on Monday, who beat them 41–29 in November.

Hamrick reflected, “It wasn’t our best effort, so hopefully we can sneak away with a win.”
