Lady Bulldogs in 1st-place tie
The Quitman Lady Bulldogs pulled into a first place tie in the district basketball race last Tuesday.
Despite trailing district leader Malakoff for most of the contest in Ballard Gym, Quitman got the 38-37 win when Kaylin Sapp knocked down a three-pointer with 10 seconds left in the game.
That left the two teams with one loss each, having split the season series, each with a win at home.
Quitman will try to hold onto the tie when the Lady Bulldogs visit third-place Mineola on Friday.
Quitman won the first meeting Jan. 7 at home, 46-45.
Mineola already has two losses to Malakoff. The Lady Jackets were 55-37 winners over Eustace last Tuesday and had a bye Friday.
Malakoff, previously unbeaten in district, started off with a 17-10 lead in the first quarter as five Lady Bulldogs registered points.
Quitman’s defense helped narrow the margin, allowing just a three-pointer and a free throw in the second period while adding eight points to trim the edge to 21-18 at halftime. Again Quitman was balanced with four players scoring.
Malakoff stretched the lead with an 11-6 third quarter to go into the final period up 32-24. Autumn Cason had all Quitman’s points on two baskets and 2-2 free throws.
Malakoff converted only one basket in the final quarter while making 3-6 free throws.
Quitman scored with three-pointers from Allie Berry and Addison Sapp as well as Kaylin Sapp’s winner.
Addison Sapp and Sadie Vander Schaaf each added baskets to the comeback effort.
Berry had 10 points on the night, Cason nine and Addison Sapp eight.
The Bulldogs remained winless in district play with a 40-24 loss to Malakoff.
Quitman fell behind early with just two points in each of the first two quarters, 24-4.
Lane Harkins scored 10 points and Dylan Eppers six for the Bulldogs.
On Friday Quitman girls received a forfeit from Winona while the boys fell 54-34.
