The Quitman Lady Bulldogs qualified for the state cross country meet Tuesday morning with a second-place finish in the Region II 3A meet at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie.

Lady Bulldogs earn state berth in cross country

The Quitman Lady Bulldogs qualified for the state cross country meet Tuesday morning with a second-place finish in the Region II 3A meet at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie.

Quitman placed three runners in the top 13 places, led by freshman Brayleigh Wood, who recorded a time of 14:09.81 for second place. Winning time was 13:48.14.

Teammate Maddie Pence, who had to sit out the district meet due to illness, also cracked the top 10 with a ninth place finish in 14:44.55 to return to the state meet, which she made last year as an individual.

Also finishing in the top 10 and qualifying for state was sophomore Olivia Hughes of Mineola, also a state-meet returner. She was timed in 14:35.05 for 6th place.

Katie Degorstiza of Quitman placed 13th in 14:59.02, McKenna Wood 21st in 15:32.26 and Kendall Davis 45th in 16:36.61 for the team’s points.

Also competing for Quitman were Amanita Bautista in 76th and Bonnie Vander Schaaf in 96th.

The Mineola girls came in 6th place. Raylie Peebles was 24th in 15:50.6, Shylah Kratzmeyer 27th in 15:57.81, Yareli Hernandez 72nd in 17:07.50 and Jaylee Nevarez 87th in 17:25.21. Also running for the Lady Jackets were Destiny Gandy in 118th and Desiree Gandy in 131st in a field of 175 runners.

On the boys side, Brandt Peterson of Alba-Golden qualified for the 2A meet Monday and placed 72nd in 20:26.

The state meet will be held Saturday, Nov. 5 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. The girls have the first time slot at 8:30 a.m.
