The game, which Mineola dropped 88-49, will undoubtedly be used as a season marker for the Yellowjackets.
TJ Moreland hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring. It was the only lead of the night for the Jackets.
Martin’s Mill got its offense started slowly, but their ability to finish at the basket and excellent outside shooting gave them a 10-point lead after the initial quarter.
Although Mineola generated six Mustang turnovers in the first quarter, and showed some good movement on offense, the visitors were simply more exact in their play.
Martin’s Mill ran a zone defense but pressured the ball on the edges of that defense. It resulted in an extreme challenge for the Yellowjacket team which was only this week fully constituted.
The second quarter was an offensive production line. Mineola put in 22 points while the Mustangs registered 26. Every time it looked as though Mineola could threaten the lead, Martin’s Mill immediately scored in return.
Martin’s Mill worked a four-corners set at the end of the half to set-up a 3-point attempt from behind a double screen. The score made it 45-27 at the half.
Mineola was never able to generate a run in the second half. The visitors’ pressure-zone was suffocating and required a lot of work to generate a shot.
Dawson Pendergrass made a strong statement with his hustle and inside work. He will no doubt be a presence this season. As expected, Jonah Fischer and TJ Moreland excelled pushing the ball, with Fischer scoring most of the Jackets’ second half points.
Fischer, Moreland and Pendergrass scored in double figures, with Aidan Steward pitching in five and Jackson Anderson and Conner Gibson each contributing a bucket.
Also dressing out for the Yellowjackets were Jaxon Holland and Andrew Stinchfield.
In action over the weekend, Mineola got a 56-31 win over Sunnyvale on Friday. The Jackets got off to a quick start with a 22-10 lead in the first quarter.
On Saturday Brook Hill edged the Yellowjackets 46-39.
The next opportunity to support the Jackets will be Friday as they host Rock Springs. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m.
