Alba-Golden taps Smith as athletic director
When Derek Smith gave up his position as head football coach and athletic director at Rains High School nearly a year ago and accepted the position of defensive coordinator and girls track coach at Alba-Golden High School starting in August there was one thing in the back of his mind, that was how nice it would be to become the head coach and athletic director at Alba-Golden.
Ron Callahan was the A.D. and head football coach at Alba-Golden and was a very popular man in that position with the athletes, the school faculty and the community. However, Callahan had been a coach for a long time and the years were starting to wear away at him, especially a bad knee that bothered him more and more as time wore on.
Monday night the world of both men changed drastically as it was officially announced at the Alba-Golden Board meeting that Callahan had retired from high school coaching effective at the end of this school year and that Smith had been selected to fill the spot of head football coach and athletic director with the start of the 2017-2018 school year.
That announcement came at the end of an hour and two minute long executive session that consumed about 70 percent of the entire meeting time Monday night.
Also, coming after the executive session was the employment of Megan Pruitt as an agriculture science teacher for the 2017-2018 school year, the acceptance of the resignation of eighth grade teacher Leann Cross and the announcement of the retirement of Theater Arts Teacher Jeanette Peel and fifth grade Teacher Sherry Ragsdale.
In the 17 minutes the board met prior to the executive session, they:
* approved a new seven-year contract with Coca-Cola;
* awarded a bid of $53,526 each for two 30-passenger school busses to Thomas Built Buses;
* gave approval for Superintendent Dwayne Ellis to serve on the Regional Advisory Committee for Region 7;
* okayed routine Texas Association of School Boards updates;
* approved instructional materials allotment and TEKS Certification for 2017-2018 and
* approved four days early dismissal to be utilized as necessary at the discretion of the superintendent.
Alba-Golden had $100,000 in the budget for the two new buses and will make up the additional $7,052 the two new buses will cost from the regular transportation budget.
