QHS takes second at UIL competition

Quitman High School was second out of eight schools in the district UIL meet recently. Several students are headed to the April 8 region meet at Tyler Junior College.

The QHS accounting team brought home first place. They were Ashton Midkiff (first), Elizabeth Turner (second), Kaylynn Bradberry (fifth) and Mandy Hubbard (sixth). They are coached by Elizabeth Jackson Miller. “Our kids worked hard and succeeded and I’m so proud to be part of a thriving academic environment at QHS,” Miller said.

The Current Events team also came in first place. Team members are Billy Brannon (first), Sydney White (second), Ashton Midkiff (third) and Elise Woodruff (fifth). These students were coached by Sherrie Callahan.

The Computer Science team added another first place effort by QHS students. That team was composed of Justin Blalock (first), Max Peddy (second) and Jacob Rowland (sixth). David Cross coached this team. Cross also coached Sydney White (fourth) and Jacob Rowland (sixth) in Number Sense.

Elise woodruff took a fourth place in Headline Writing and she was coached by Kristina Johnson. In Informative speaking Jentri Jackson took third place and Jeremy Peek earned fourth place. They were coached by Terry McConagill. McConagill was also the coach for Billy Brannon (third) and Sydeny Webb (sixth) in Persuasive Speaking.

Kristina Johnson coached participants in Copy Editing where Sydney White won first, Elise Woodruff fourth and Ashton Midkiff fifth. Johnson coached Woodruff in Poetry Interpretation where she won sixth place.

Kayla Munger, coached by McGonagill, took a fifth in Ready Writing and Caroline Cameron won second in Spelling and Vocabulary coached by Sarah Milner Cameron.
