Jackets win first place, Lady Js take fourth in Mineola track meet


Both the Mineola boys and girls track & field teams had great showings during a track meet held at Meredith Memorial Stadium Thursday. Of the nine schools competing the boys team finished in first place while the girls team finished in fourth.

 The meet had 17 total events and multiple Jackets for both the girls and boys teams performed well with top three finishes.

 On the boys side, Curtis London had a solid performance as he came in third in the 100 meter dash running an 11.53, third in the 200 meter dash running a 23.46 and fifth in the triple jump. Kelby Brunner also ran the 200 meter dash in 23.55, finishing in fourth just behind London.

 Carlos Galaz had a stellar performance on Thursday as he swept first place finishes in both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. Galaz ran the 1600 meter in 4:32 and ran the 3200 meter in 10:08. David Amador finished in fifth place in both races as well for the Jackets with a finish of 10:52. 

 On the hurdles Davion Sneed finished in first place in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.07 and also came in fifth in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 43.55.

 While Mineola’s 4X100 meter relay team struggled finishing last on Thursday running a time of 44.74, they more than made up for it in the 4X200 meter race as London, Shaw Franklin, Kelby Brunner, and Cody Ford came in first place finishing with a time of 1:31. In the 4X400 meter race, Devin Cormier replaced London on the relay team as the Jackets finished in third running a 3:32.

 In the shot put Jacob Hurst came in third throwing 40’7”. Ian Thompson came in first place in the discus throwing 134’4 1/2”.

 In the triple jump three Jackets placed in fourth, fifth, and sixth place. Cormier finished with a jump of 40’ 3 1/2”, London’s best jump was 40’ 2 1/2” and Wylie Franks jump 40’ 1”.

 On pole vault Jimmy Cunningham finished with a 10’ vault for fifth place.

 On the girls side, Kiara Williams finished in second in the 400 meter dash running a 1:04.30, while Rachel Martinez came in third with a 1:04.51 and Meghan Brewington finished in fourth with a 1:04.96. Brewington also performed well in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:29.36 good enough for second place. Tristian Kirk finished in sixth place in the 100 meter hurdles as she ran a 17.82. Alaina Lopez finished in fourth in the 300 meter hurdles as she ran a 50:48.

 In the girls relays Sheila Smith, Tahjae Black, Lovely Wright and Kiara Williams came in fourth in the 4X100 meter relay with a time of 52.13. Williams, Brewington, Lopez and Martinez had a great performance as they came in first in the 4X400 meter relay with a finishing time of 4:17.

 In shot put Tiara Stephens came in second after her best throw measured 31’ 7 1/2”. Stephens also finished in fifth place in the discus with a throw of 77’ 9”. Lacie Brown finished in sixth place in the discus with a 76’ 5”.

 Abby Kratzmeyer also had a very good meet as she came in first place in pole vault with a measurement of 10’.
