After a 5-6 season including a first round playoff exit in 2017 the 2018 Mineola Yellowjackets are hoping to build on their rollercoaster season last fall as preseason camp begins in three weeks.
The Jackets while remaining in class 3A will be moving east in football, taking on Gladewater, Sabine, Tatum, White Oak, West Rusk and Winnsboro in the new District 8-3A DI. District play begins Sept. 28.
In February after the district realignment was announced Head Coach Luke Blackwell said, “I expect that our new district is going to be very tough and competitive. This alignment saw a couple of tough 4A schools come down a classification in Gladewater and Tatum. We also have West Rusk who has been very successful as well the last few years, along with White Oak and Sabine who were in our previous alignment. From top to bottom, I expect that this will be one of the better districts in class 3A. Our kids and coaches are already working hard to prepare ourselves to compete! We are excited for the new challenge.”
The Jackets preseason camp begins Aug. 1 for ninth graders and Aug. 6 for all grades. The Jackets first game is slated for Aug. 31 at home against Wills Point who they beat 34-14 last season. They will also face Canton Sept. 7, in week three the Jackets will travel to Farmersville to face the Farmers after beating them in one of the best games of the year last fall when the Jackets won 35-14. The Jackets will then close out their preseason schedule by hosting Big Sandy Sept. 21.
