Wood County Industrial Commission (WCIC) Board of Directors approved $50,000 for Wood County Airport Collins Field at their Oct. 5 meeting in Winnsboro. The funds will help their expansion project which includes increasing the size of the runway, and re-development of the tarmac along with other areas of the airport.
“The runway needs to be lengthened to accommodate larger airplanes who need to use the facility for business in Wood County,” WCIC Executive Director Kiki Bettis said. “We have businesses, other than those we already have, who would use the airport if the runway had the longer runway for their planes.”
New board members from Holly Lake, Chris Flournoy and Jim Berry were welcomed to the board for their first meeting. Flournoy is the IT director for Wood County while Berry is retired from being a chamber of commerce manger and economic development director in various places.
In her report to the board, Bettis reminded the board about the Wood County Airport Collins Field VIP Appreciation Luncheon Oct. 27 at noon at Collins hangar at the airport.
Bettis told the board about the Patriot Sporting Challenge Lunkers, Bunkers and Clay which will be a team competition with golfing, fishing and shooting being held Oct. 27 and 28. A 50-shot flight of sporting clays will take place at The Hidden Lakes Resort just west of Yantis while the golf challenge will be at The Links at Land’s End and the fishing taking place at Lake Fork.
“There will be great food, a silent auction, raffles, nationally known speakers, professional athletes celebrities and professional musical entertainment by Don Woods,” Bettis said. “There will be the ‘Concert by the Lake” Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Links at Land’s End on Saturday, Oct. 28.” Food will be provided by several local restaurants and chefs on Oct. 28, along with keynote speakers and refreshments.
The WCIC board will meet again Nov. 2 in the Alba area.
