Golden preparing for annual potato festival

The Golden Sweet Potato Festival returns to its namesake Wood County community Oct. 22-24.

Events kick off with the Miss Sweet Potato Pageant at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22.

Friday events include Mutton Bustin’ for youngsters at 6 p.m. at Pierce Boyd Area followed by gospel singing at 7 p.m.

The parade is set for 10 a.m. to kick off the events Saturday.

Pageant categories for girls include Miss Potato Sprout (0-18 months); Miss Tater Tot (19 to 47 months); Miss Curly Fry (4-6 years) (PK, K, 1st); Lil’ Miss Sweet Potato (2nd- 5th grade); Jr. Miss Sweet Potato (6th-8th grade); Sweet Potato Princess (9th -11th grade); Queen (Alba-Golden High School Sr.)

Boys categories include Mr. Potato Sprout (0-12 months); Mr. Tater Tot (13-24 months); Mr. Curly Fry (25-48 months).

Special Olympics returns in style

Symphonic band presents Christmas concert

Come on over to Mineola’s beautiful Historic Select Theater and hear the Lake Country Symphonic Band’s Christmasy “Everything Christmas” concert.

Concerts are Sunday, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m. and Tuesday evening, Dec. 19, at 7:30 p.m. Mike Holbrook is back in the director’s seat, so it’s sure to be a fun-filled couple of hours.
