The Quitman Lady Bulldogs continue to play close games but came up short against Eustace and Alba-Golden last week dropping them to 0-4 in district play. They fell on the road at Eustace 7-3 and at home to the Lady Panthers 12-10.

Against Alba-Golden, Quitman took a 1-0 first inning lead and Alba-Golden tied it up at 1-1 after two innings. The Lady Panthers scored in each inning after that, building a 11-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning when Quitman exploded for five runs to cut the lead to 11-6.

The Lady Panthers came back with a run in the top of the seventh making the score 12-6. A Quitman rally scored four runs to make it 12-10, but the Lady Bulldogs couldn’t push across any additional runs. Quitman out-hit Alba-Golden 14-12, but the Lady Bulldogs’ nine errors proved costly.

“We came out and got an early run but our bats went silent for four innings. We came back strong in the sixth and seventh innings, but came up just short. We stranded 11 runners and that really hurt us,” Coach Chris Veach said. “Defensively, we made too many errors, and just couldn’t recover from it. I’m very proud of the fight they showed to come back and give ourselves a chance. We just have to keep working to improve.”

Hannah Baucom led the offense with a 4-4 night with three singles, a triple, three RBI and three runs scored. Hannah Hardy went 2-4 with a double while Macy Wilson added a pair of singles. Makala Mitchell had two singles, two runs scored and two RBI with Shelby Bettis adding a single and two runs scored. For Alba-Golden Gracie Pendergrass got a single and a double while Roberts went 4-4 with a triple and two runs scored A. Rogers added three singles and two runs scored.

The Lady Bulldogs traveled to Eustace Friday and fell 7-3. With the game tied at 3-3 Eustace had a four-run sixth inning to earn the victory. Shelby Hayes, Brittany Walls, Baucom, Hardy and Bettis each had singles in the game.

This week the Lady Bulldogs host Mineola Tuesday and travel to Edgewood Friday.
