Edgewood too much for A-G

The Edgewood Lady Bulldogs are a machine. They decimated a solid Alba-Golden Lady Panther side last Tuesday to retain their undefeated district record.

The three-game match win was noteworthy for the consistently-dominant play, but even more so for the intricacies of just how the Lady Bulldogs play volleyball.

Edgewood plays very precise volleyball. Their game is centered on maneuvering assist-specialist Libby Martin to the correct position for her to offer up sets for the talented strikers.

Other characteristics of Edgewood’s game include a high degree of net discipline, precise placement and tempo of service, excellent block timing at the net, and the ability to sense one another’s presence on the court.

A core of six seniors anchors the squad. “They have played together since they were young, and they are all good friends,” remarked Edgewood Head Coach Stacy Parker. “They have a connection which is hard to define,” she continued, “and they have been in our athletic program since they started competitive sports.”

Although senior Kate Farnsworth is out with an injury, her classmates Mady Bachtel, Libby Martin, Tabitha Parker, Kenzie Smith and Amber Stern carry the team. They are assisted by junior blocking-specialist Keeley Randle and freshmen T-Belle Smith and Ella Tyner.

Two dates to circle on the calendar are Tuesday, Oct. 22 and Tuesday, Oct. 29, when the Quitman Lady Bulldogs and Mineola Lady Jackets, respectively, will host Edgewood.

Those two contests will likely have playoff consequences and serve as a litmus test for the local teams against a top-tier volleyball side.
