DNA evidence has led to the arrest of a suspect in a 2015 incident at Sky Ranch in Smith County.

Caylon James Whittington, 29, listed as a Mineola resident, was arrested in Llano County April 6 following an arrest warrant issued April 5 in Smith County.

He was transported back to Smith County and booked on a $250,000 bond April 19.

According to the Smith County Sheriff’s Dept. a child staying at the Christian camp in March 2015 woke up in the night to find a man laying beside her in bed in a cabin.

The suspect fled and was not located, though a canvass of the area included questioning Whittington, who lived nearby at the time and denied any knowledge of the incident.

The child received a sexual assault exam and provided a description of the suspect.

On Oct. 15, 2020, the national DNA data base returned a match in the case to Whittington, which was followed up with a known sample from Whittington, also a match returned on April 1.

He was charged with burglary of a habitation with intent to commit a sex offense.
