Mineola ran away with the District 12-3A track championship at the two-day event last week held at the Eustace athletic complex. The Jackets left no doubt of their talents scoring 173 points to their closest competitor, Kemp, who scored 127 taking second place.
Mineola nailed down several first place finishes sparking the overall win. Kourtland Sinches sparkled in the 100 meter dash with a speedy time of 11.35 seconds. Kartney Hampton was superb in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:58.10 to lead the pack. With a winning time of 41.5 in the 300 meter hurdles, Shaw Franklin took first place.
Other first place winners for Mineola were: the 4X400 meter relay with runners Cameron Davis, Franklin, Hampton and Dalton Harris; Drason Tenner shot put with a toss of 45-6 1/2 ; and pole vaulter Cameron Hayes with a jump of 13-0.
Team standings after first place Mineola and second place Kemp were: third Eustace; fourth Scurry-Rosser; fifth Edgewood, sixth Grand Saline; seventh Alba-Golden; and eighth Quitman.
Rounding out Mineola athletes placing were as follows: second place Davis 400 meter dash; Franklin 110 meter hurdles; 4X200 relay (Hampton, Harris, Sinches and Curtis London); Sinches-long jump; Ian Thompson-discus; and Sinches-triple jump. Third place winners were: London-200 meter dash; 4X100 realy (Kelby Bruner, Harris, London and Sinches); Hampton-long jump; K.J. Hawkins-discus; and Hampton-triple jump. Taking fourth place finishes were: Davion Sneed-110 meter hurdles; and Jacob Hurst-shot put. London had a fifth place finish in triple jump. Devon Goguen added sixth place points in the 300 meter hurdles and Tyler Stanford rounded out Mineola scoring with a sixth place finish in the pole vault.
Earning points for Alba-Golden were: Chris Chabaud with a second place and Toby Shelton with third in the pole vault; two fourth place finishes, one for the 4X100 meter relay and the other in the 4X200 meter relay with both teams consisting of Shelton, Cody Frazier, Dakota Melton and Luke Kindle; and a sixth place finish by Athony Kindle in the 3200 meter run.
Quitman scoring came from a third place finish in the high jump by Stephen Love; and in the shot put with Teague Stewart taking fifth and Sebastian Howell sixth.
The top four finishers in each event will go to the area meet at Eustace this Thursday.
Eustance tops Lady Jackets to take girls championship
The Eustace girl’s track team eased past the rest of the field scoring 188 points to win the district 12-3A girl’s track crown. Wood County was represented by Mineola, who finished second, Alba-Golden taking third and Quitman coming in fifth.
There were several first place finishes from the Wood County schools. Mineola’s Jessiah Riley won the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.79 and she also took first in the long jump with a distance of 16-3 ½. Mineola dominated the relay races winning first place in the 4X100 meter event (Lena Hughes, Riley, Sheila Smith and Kiara Williams); the 4X200 meter relay (Hughes, Alaina Lopez, Smith and Williams) and the 4X400 (M. Brewington, Rachel Martinez, Williams and Hughes). Lopez won first in the 300 meter hurdles.
Alba-Golden had several first place finishes at the meet. They were: Ashlyn Rogers-400 meter dash (with a time of 1:03.65) and pole vault with a vault of 8-0); Beth Nichols-long jump (with a jump of 16-3 ½); Shelby Wright-shot put (with a throw of 36-11 ½); and Briana Weissert-32-6 ¼).
Quitman got first place medals from Madalyn Spears who won the 220 meter dash with a time of 26.30 and Utopia Henry who won the discus on a throw of 112-4.
Second place finishes from Lady Jackets were: Jessica Riley-200 meter dash; M. Brewington-800 meter run; and Kristiana Welch-1600 meter run. Mineola had two third place finishes and they were: Lopez-100 meter hurdles and Tristan Kirk-300 meter hurdles. Finishing fourth place were: Welch-3200 meter run; Kirk 100 meter hurdles and Tiara Stephens-shot put. Taking home fifth place finishes were: Sabria Dean-800 meter run and 400 meter dash; and Smith-200 meter dash. Sixth place points were scored by Shaquel Choice-100 meter dash; K. Brewington-800 meter run; Taylor Griffin-discus; and Lena Hughes-high jump.
Other medals won by Alba-Golden were third place finishes by Aspen Howard in the long jump; Wright-discus; Rogers-triple jump; and Gracie Pendergrass-high jump. Fourth place finishes were Sarah Boykin-300 meter hurdles; 4X100 relay (Rogers, Howard, Nichols and Morgan Curts); and the 4X200 relay (Howard, Nichols, Curts and Lizzie Hallman). Ginny Carson took a fifth place in pole vault while Pendergrass won fifth in the long jump. Scoring points for sixth place finishes were: Nichols-200 meter dash; Laralie Newland-3200 meter and 1600 meter runs; Grace Bizzell-100 meter high hurdles; and Hallman in triple jump.
For Quitman Spears also scored second place points for 100 meter dash. Jentri Jackson had a third place finish in pole vault and also getting a third was the 4X400 relay team (Jackson, Spears, Julia Simpkins and Selene Preciado). Finishing fifth for Quitman were Joanna Santiago in the 1600 meter run and the 3200 meter run. Spears added a busy day with a sixth place finish in the long jump.
The top four finishers in each event will go to the area meet at Eustace Thursday.
