Deadline closing soon for hotel tax fund project applications

The deadline for Hotel/Motel Occupancy Tax (HOT) fund project proposals for the 2019-20 fiscal year will soon close.

The deadline to submit applications to the Wood County Industrial Commission (WCIC) is May 24 by 5 p.m.

To be accepted for funding, projects must enhance tourism and the hotel/motel industry in the county, show a need, have the likelihood to attract tourists to Wood County and fit into one of the categories for spending local HOT revenues under the state tax code.

Funding request forms can be found on the WCIC website, For examples of previously funded projects or more information, contact WCIC Executive Director Kiki Bettis at 903-768-2402 or by email at or

Applications can be turned in via mail at P.O. Box 578 in Quitman or email or Applications can be brought to the WCIC office at the Wood County Airport terminal.

“Projects should support the lodging establishments in the county as that’s where these funds are generated from—‘heads in beds.’ More ‘heads in beds’ means additional HOT revenue and the opportunity to fund more projects the following year,” Bettis said.

New projects should have a business plan and marketing strategy on how the proposal would bring overnight visitors to Wood County.

The WCIC Promotions Committee will review requests to forward recommendations to the WCIC board of directors at the monthly meeting in July.
