The Wood County District Attorney’s Office and UT Health East Texas, hosted its sixth annual First Responders’ Softball Tournament Oct. 18. The tournament raised $14,241 for the East Texas Crisis Center (ETCC) through community and corporate sponsorships, participatory entry fees, donations and concessions.

ETCC, which opened in 1978, is a non-profit organization committed to providing safety, shelter and education to victims of family violence, sexual assault, dating violence and other violent crime and restoring dignity and purpose to their lives while promoting public compassion and awareness to reduce violence in the community.

October is Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, and the softball tournament was designed to raise community awareness about the devastating effects of family violence.

“Domestic violence has no boundaries. It knows no racial, financial or locational lines. It impacts us all in our schools, churches and communities. It is my hope that by raising awareness, we can each do our part to end the cycle of abuse,” said Wood County District Attorney Angela Albers.

This year’s tournament attracted 106 players with eight teams from throughout the first responder community. Teams included UT Health, Mineola Fire Department, Wood County Sheriff’s Office, Mineola Police Department, Quitman-Hawkins Fire Departments, East Texas Crisis Center, Department of Public Safety and Christus EMS.

“The tournament was a tremendous success. First responders, who work so hard in keeping us healthy and safe, were able to enjoy playing softball together while we raised funds for a non-profit organization that provides much needed services to victims. It was exciting to see the players having a great time interacting with one another on the softball fields with a spirit of friendly competition,” said Albers.

The Ash Kickers, a team of Quitman and Hawkins Volunteer Firefighters and employees of Wood County Electric Cooperative and their families and friends, took home the first-place trophy. Mineola Fire Department came in second.
